The wetsuit is an essential element in the diving equipment, which takes a lot of love. It protects us from the cold, from bumps, scratches and if it is really good it can even hide the belly gives us that adventurer halo that looks so good on Facebook images.
Wetsuits are expensive, let’s not kid ourselves. A good wet suit for diving will cost us from € 200 and from there to € 1,000 for good dry suits. It is important that you learn how to take care of it and we can use it on hundreds of dives. If you are constant and follow these tips you will get that new suit out of fashion.
1 Rinse your suit immediately after diving
As soon as you finish the dive, put your suit in fresh water or give it a good hose to remove the salt. If you don’t rinse it, when the water evaporates the salt will crystallize, damaging your suit and allowing more water to enter the next time you dive with it.
2 Dry it upside down
When you put it to dry, turn it over and let the inside of the suit dry first. Thus, if you do a dive the next day you will have a dry interior and it will be more pleasant to put it on. On the other hand it is better that it is the interior that receives the light, which removes flexibility from the suit, and not the exterior part.
3 Do not expose it to the sun
Following the above advice, whenever possible, do not expose the suit to the sun. Ultraviolet rays will damage the fibers of your suit (as they do with all fibers, by the way) but in the case of the wetsuit they will remove elasticity and crack it, allowing more water to enter each time you submerge.
4 Store it on a multipurpose hanger
As you will have seen, the wetsuit weighs more than your shirts. When you go for a time without diving you can hang your suit on the multipurpose hangers that will not damage the shoulder straps of the suit and thus will hold you longer. It can also be folded and stored in a drawer, but make sure it’s not badly folded or snapped on.
5 Be careful if you use the washing machine
Do not leave your mother the suit to wash unless you want to buy another latest model of diving suit. Residual detergent, spin and hot water are best friends in dive shops. You can wash your suit in the washing machine as long as you wash it alone, in the cold and use a program without spin.
6 Don’t use detergent
With the use the suit will smell regular (especially if you are one of those who urinate in their suit because there is no other remedy) and will not go away with the simple rinse. Put it in the bathtub for 15 minutes with a little shampoo for children and rinse it well afterwards
7 Take care of the zippers
If you don’t care and wax the zippers from time to time they can break, ruining the suit completely. Use special waxes for the care and maintenance of zippers.
8 Be careful with high temperatures
Excessive heat is one of the most damaging elements for your suit. Never wash the suit in hot water or leave it in a car in full sun. The heat damages the neoprene tissues causing it to lose elasticity and even break.
The suit does not need ironing
We put it in last place because we very much doubt that someone is going to iron his suit, but you never know. If you iron it, you take it.
